Stone Portico Restoration

Waterproofing improvements were made on the portico followed by the restoration of the sandstone masonry elements below. The concrete deck was cleaned by recognized standards and an anti-roosting system was installed. Copper flashings were replaced and sealed at columns and walls. The balcony drain was replaced and sealed. The arch columns were repointed with a masonry restoration mortar suitable for heritage masonry. Surfaces and damaged corners of the masonry units were repaired or replaced with masonry restoration mortar products or in kind sandstone. The balcony concrete deck soffit and top of the masonry walls were cleaned using environmentally friendly cleaning products then the fresco panels were repainted. The entrance door and door frame were removed and repaired. 

FSA’s Role

FSA was engaged as the prime consultant to investigate, design, administer the portico restoration and provide expert consulting on heritage and building envelope aspects while working with local heritage group and municipal governments. FSA completed an investigation of existing conditions and provided a report with recommendations and Class D cost estimates. FSA was then engaged to complete the design and administer the project.
